My first time making 1780s historical stays! -
Tiffany Chan

Hello all! I think I may make corsetry/stays into a series here on my channel since it has quickly become my favorite type of project. I'm really happy with how this project turned out and will absolutely be using this pattern to make more stays, likely with some alterations, in the future.

This pattern was excellent and I’ll have a lot of fun with it in the future. Here are a list of all my materials if you want to create the same design. My biggest piece of advice is to go slow.

Materials:

  • Pattern from RedThreaded

  • Floral Jacard Fabric

  • Heavy iron on cotton interfacing

  • Cotton Canvas

  • 1/4 inch acrylic boning

  • Grommets

  • Grommet tool or Grommet press

  • Ribbon to use for the bias tape

  • Ribbon for lacing

  • The purple skirt was gifted to me by Scarlet Darkness and really helped to inspire this overall look (Use code TIFFANYCHAN to get 20% off your order!)

  • Boots are from Amazon

A few things I did differently from the pattern that helped create a more snug fit:

  • Cut down the back by 1 inch (I will likely cut it down further in the future)

  • Made both the front and back of the pattern open rather than leaving it as a closed back as the pattern showed. This requires some redesign of the back panel and boning channels. Remember to keep the 1 inch seam allowance here to reinforce the grommets as you follow the rest of the pattern.

  • Cut down the front to be more of a point rather than a petal shape.

  • I also did not make the straps or the modesty panel.
